Doreen is a growing community where many everyday needs can be managed close to home, from shopping and appointments to recreation and local activities. Our Supported Independent Living in Doreen helps participants build a stable home routine while receiving personalised support with personal care, household tasks, life skills, community participation and overnight needs.
Supported Independent Living is NDIS funded assistance for participants who need regular support at home. SIL may be delivered in a shared household or an individual home, with the level of support based on assessed needs and approved funding.
For one participant, SIL may mean help getting ready in the morning and preparing meals. For another, it may involve active overnight support, mobility assistance and help managing most household routines. The support should reflect the participant rather than a standard programme.
SIL may be worth exploring if regular assistance would make daily life safer, more consistent or more independent.
Doreen has developed around local neighbourhood centres and strong links with nearby Mernda. Laurimar Town Centre provides local shopping and services, while nearby Mernda offers rail connections and additional community facilities. Our SIL support can help participants build confidence using the places that already form part of their local area.
We assist with showering, grooming, dressing, toileting, mobility and transfers. Morning and evening support is planned around the participant’s routine rather than a fixed timetable.
We support grocery planning, cooking, cleaning, laundry and keeping the home organised. Participants can work alongside support workers to develop skills gradually.
Life skills support may include budgeting, meal preparation, planning appointments, communication and travel planning. Trips to Laurimar Town Centre or nearby Mernda can become useful opportunities to practise shopping and community access skills.
We support appointments, social activities, hobbies, local recreation, family visits and community participation based on the participant’s interests.
Where approved, SIL may include sleepover support, active overnight assistance, evening care, monitoring or 24 hour staffing.
Initial conversation
We discuss the participant’s current living situation, daily challenges and future goals.
Support needs review
We look at the NDIS plan and the practical assistance required throughout the day and night.
Personalised planning
We build support around routines, communication preferences, cultural needs and independence goals.
Service agreement
We document what support will be provided and how the arrangement can be changed when needed.
Ongoing reviews
We review progress and adjust support as the participant develops new skills or their needs change.
Families, guardians, support coordinators and allied health professionals can provide valuable input into SIL planning. We collaborate with the participant’s consent and keep their choices central throughout the process.
For more information about the service itself, visit our Supported Independent Living page.

We want support to help participants do more, not simply have more done for them. Our Doreen SIL approach combines dependable assistance with opportunities to build skills and participate in the local community.
